When
I'm not at the movies or dreaming up column ideas, my greatest passion is
writing historical fiction.
My first novel, The Witch From The Sea, a swashbuckler, was published
in 2001. It's a love story, a coming-of-age adventure, and an eccentric comedy
of manners about a woman who runs with the pirates to free herself from the
conventional "rules" of gender, race and class. Set in the West
Indies ca. 1823, it's the first installment of a trilogy. The second volume, Runaways, is complete. The third, A Comedy Of Marriage, is under
construction.
An
earlier draft of The Witch From The Sea was published in a German-language
edition in 1998 as Die heimliche Piratin (The Secret Pirate). A German
trade paperback edition was published in 2000.
Short stories based on characters in The Witch From The Sea have been
published in the pirate magazine No Quarter Given, as follows:
Diabolito's Curse Volume IV, Nos. 2 and 3, March and May 1997
The Rebel Doubloons Volume VII, No. 1 January, 2000
The Grim Ship Volume X, No. 1 January, 2003
My recently completed novel Beast: A Love Story, is a literary fairy
tale set in the province of Burgundy, ca. 1600.
My historical fantasy, Alias Hook, presents an alternative view of Neverland from the caustic perspective of Captain Hook. My short story, Proserpina's Curse, an excerpt from this novel, was published in the Summer, 2006 issue of Paradox Magazine (Issue # 9).
